James King Bonnar, a Newtonville, Massachusetts artist, was born in North Adams, Massachusetts on 12 May 1885. He was a graduate of the Massachusetts School of Art and studied under Joseph Decamp, Ernest L. Major and others. Member: Newton Art Association, Rockport Art Association, North Shore Art Association, Copley Society, Marblehead Art Association, and the Brick Store Museum of Kennebunkport. Exhibited: Rockport Art Association, 1940 – 1946; North Shore Art Association, 1935 – 1946; Salmagundi Club at Bethel Inn. Bonnar was the painter of the “New England Scene” and murals in private homes and institutions; he is represented in many private collections in the United States and Canada. He was a teacher and a demonstrator in the arts. He was President, Copley Society of Boston; President, Business Men’s Art Club of Boston; founder and first President, Newton Art Association. He worked out of his studio in Newtonville, Massachusetts, and spent his summers on Cape Ann.
