Japanese Sado Island Ship Tansu Chest

Japanese Sado Island funa-dansu ship Tansu Chest, with elaborate iron decorative elements, engraved escutcheons and locks. ┬áMeiji period, Ca. 1800’s Traditionally used by merchants to safeguard important valuables while traveling at sea. Many of these chests were so well made, they were rumored to be water-tight in case the ship encountered trouble. This heavyweight wood piece is an outstanding example showing the abundant metalwork often associated with this type of tansu. ┬áThis item is SOLD.
