David Philip Wilson was born in 1902 in Monongahela, PA and spent the majority of his very active artistic life in Cleveland, OH. He studied at the Carnegie Institute of Art and Design under Charles Hopkinson. A renowned portraitist, Wilson painted the portraits of many important personages of the 1940’s through the 1960’s. He had a full roster of portrait clients, among them Lyndon Baines Johnson, whose portrait is on display in the permanent collection of the State Capital of Texas and Thomas J. Herbert and John W. Brown, Governors of Illinois, whose portraits were commissioned by the State of Ohio and hang in State House. In addition to his portrait commissions, he taught portraiture at the Ringling School of Art. Wilson is also known for his marine paintings, done during his summers in New England and in Rockport, MA, where he experimented with seascapes, landscape work and photography. He was a frequent exhibitor at the Art Institute of Chicago and the Cleveland Museum, among other venues, his work winning numerous prizes, medals and public and critical acclaim.
